Makawehi Point at Blue Hour
In this image to the right, which was taken about 20 minutes after the image above, the cooler ‘blue hour’ light has begun as the sun drops behind the cliffs. I used a longer exposure on the this image, which gives the waves a softer sense of motion. Notice how much the clouds changed over a short period! For a 1/4 sec exposure, the fading evening light required a very high ISO.

Drunk Artist with Paint brush
This stunning light show started well after sunset over the tiny - and seemingly forgotten - Lumaha’i Beach on the north shore of the island. This photo was taken soon after the one above from the cove. Gear was packed and I was headed to the car when the encore started!

Makawehi Point at Golden hour
Looking out towards Keonelowa Bay on the southeast side of Kauai. This image to the left captures the warmth of the early sunset reflecting on the waves. I experimented with different shutter speeds to give just a toch of motion to the waves without blurring out the water’s detail.
Jump In!
The warm glow of early sunset over Lumaha’I Beach. On the West end of the beach near Makahoa Point, you can climb down the rocks to this small cove. You have about 20 seconds to set up the tripod and click before the next wave comes!

Waves breaking on Kamala Point
On the southeast shore near Koloa, I used a long lens to look all the way across Kawailoa Bay to capture the surf breaking on Kamala Point. I love the ocean's raw turbulent energy - emphasized by the foreshortening effect of the telephoto lens!
